InfoUSA is a database company that sells information culled from a myriad of public sources, including the yellow pages, white pages, government records and newspapers. Those buying use this data to find new customers and increase sales.
PowerSportsPro is an Omaha, NE-based multiline dealership that sells Dinli, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. Those buying use these machines to cruise around, roost dirt and haul ass.
Two businesses that couldn't be more divergent, right? Mailing lists vs. Monsters? Credit reports vs. CBRs? Demographics vs. DR-Zs?
Wrong.
When former InfoUSA execs Jon Hoffmaster and Tom Lingelbach set out to take on the powersports industry, their previous lives served them well. The company's former CFO and former president of sales and marketing, respectively, applied the tenets of Business 101 to their two-wheeled endeavor.
And while they don't see themselves or their strategy as a future model for powersports dealers, they know that any kind of business needs planning and structure. What they created is a dealership with a heavy focus on customer service, ATV sales and Internet commerce.
"We've both had more than 30 years' experience in business. We wouldn't enter into a business doing it any other way," says Lingelbach. "It's just a fundamental that you don't violate when you're trying to run any business.
