Big Texas trails: stellar growth announced, new vendors shine at Tucker Rocky's ATV retreat along the Brazos River

Zebras are the last thing a guy is thinking about when he's charging through the Texas scrub aboard 500ccs of Honda all-terrain vehicle.

But there they were. Like extras off the set of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom galloping through the clearing, trying to escape the roar of 20-odd ATVs. No time to grab the camera and shoot, just enough to stare in wonder. Zebras. Jeez.

Back at the WB Ranch lodge, other riders also talked of the zebras and other exotic animals they saw roaming through the 2,000-acre private resort near the town of Lake Whitney. But this was no safari, at least not in the typical sense. It was Tucker Rocky's annual ATV retreat, a chance to pat its top dealers on the back and offer its sales reps a briefing on the distributor's latest product offerings.

While there wasn't the mud associated with last year's boggy mess, there were enough tight trails, river crossings and rocky roads to challenge the neophytes in the group (take me for instance).

Oh, don't forget the free beer.
